The 'Media Literacy - Explained' document provides more information about media literacy: what it is and how it can be delivered through the key stage three curriculum. It is designed to provide more information about media literacy to non-specialist teachers, and explain the benefits of embedding it within their teaching and learning. It contains quotations from some bodies that teachers may be aware of (including UNESCO), and others that they may not. They demonstrate the importance of media literacy on a worldwide stage and also explain, from Media theorists and educational experts, how it can be of benefit to students and staff in school settings.

The 'Key Concepts' document breaks media literacy down into it's key components and explains these in more detail. It provides questions that students might want to explore when learning about or applying each of the key concepts and also gives examples of tasks and activities that teachers could set their students. These tasks are structured using Bloom's taxonomy which many teachers are familiar with. They are inspired by a range of subject from across the key stage three curriculum and are easily adapted to meet the needs of individual teachers, students and subjects.

Finally, the 'Media Literacy Assessment Grid' is designed to support teachers in assessing the progression of media literacy understanding and skills. The grid is divided into levels, borrowing from the new 1-9 GCSE grading system that has been applied to Key Stage three assessment at The Gryphon School. Not only will this document allow teachers to assess progress, it should also explain more clearly what the students could achieve in media literacy, regardless of their ability. This might help teachers to plan lessons and activities for their classes.

It is my hope that together, this first draft of the Media Literacy Teacher's Toolkit will enable non-specialist teachers to feel confident in embedding activities to develop media literacy in their key stage three teaching and learning.
